Refraction is the bending of light when it changes between two different media such as from air to water. In the picture to the left, the pole is straight but appears to be bent at the point where it enters the water.
Observing the effects of refraction is a common experience, and it would seem to be uncontroversial. However, while most physics books explain how to calculate the amount of refraction, few offer any explanation for the effect.
